WHAT TO DO AFTER A CAR ACCIDENT

You have to stay calm, it is a very stressful time, but this is what you should do immediately after being in an accident:

• Obtain a Police Report

The law requires that after an accident you obtain a police report. It will help with your injury case and repair of your car. Even if you don't feel like you are hurt at first, call 911 to call the police. The police report acts as the first piece of evidence in your case and will help establish who was at fault.

• Get Medical Attention

If you or your passenger are injured, call 911 for immediate medical attention. It is important that you receive treatment immediately to avoid aggravating your injury. Additionally, documentation of your injuries is very important in your injury case.

Note: Emergency hospitals are prohibited from turning you away and will have to give you medical care, even if you do not have health insurance.

• Evidence Preservation

Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved. Exchange insurance and driver's license information, this information will be on the police report. It may also help to obtain the names, phone numbers, and statements of witnesses.

• Contact a Lawyer

The attorney will contact the car insurance companies immediately. Do not sign anything or make a recorded statement before speaking with your attorney. A personal injury attorney will investigate your accident and help you understand the value of your case and insurance coverage. It will also help negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf. Without an attorney, insurance companies will take advantage and only offer a fraction of what you deserve.
